Chelsea's players and managerial staff took part in training on Wednesday as their club's upper echelons pulled off the shock transfer of the summer, snatching Barcelona's Pedro for £21million from under Manchester United's noses.

Yet manager Jose Mourinho looked pensive at the club's practice base in Cobham as he juggles keeping his first team players' spirits up after their 3-0 loss to title rivals Manchester City on Sunday, preparations for the side's next fixture away to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday coming, and continued negotiations with Everton over bringing in defender John Stones.

John Terry, who was sensationally substituted against City for the first time in 177 league starts under Mourinho's management, was also photographed on the training pitch alongside left back Cesar Azpilicueta.

In another snap, new Blues signing from Augsburg, Baba Rahman looked at home as he ran with the ball under the watchful eye of right back Branislav Ivanovic.

After breaking his nose in Chelsea's pre-season match with Barcelona in the United States, and having it bloodied again after being inadvertently punched by his own goalkeeper Asmir Begovic against City, Gary Cahill wore a protective mask on his face in training.

With regard to Wednesday's unprecedented transfer developments, Sportsmail understands that Mourinho personally spoke to Pedro to convince the winger of his worth to his new suitors in order to seal the deal from Barca.

Pedro's camp were unaware of United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's trip to Barcelona to try to get the deal over the line in what became a breakdown in United's attempt for his signature.

A United source said that the club had decided to end their interest in Pedro and that the decision was made by Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

They added: 'Money was never an issue given the buyout clause. If it was clear cut the deal would have been done weeks ago.'
