Tenerife has two airports. Located 20km east of Playa de las Americas is Tenerife Sur Airport (Tenerife South Airport). This is the airport that handles most international flights. Tenerife Norte Airport (Tenerife North Airport), is much smaller and handles almost all inter-island flights. It's located in the north of the island, near Santa Cruz. The fastest way to travel between the islands is to fly. There are also a number of boats that operate at regular times. Travelling around the island of Tenerife is possible using public transport. It's very affordable and if you purchase a Ten+ Travel Card, it becomes even better value for money. The travel card costs just €2 and can be purchased at tram and bus stations, as well as newspaper kiosks. Up to 30% can be saved on all bus routes. Renting a car is another option and there are plenty of rental firms to choose from, all over the island. Rental prices are very reasonable. You'll need to present your passport when making the booking, together with a recognised drivers license.

Paying for Things

The island uses Euros when it comes to paying for goods and services. These can be purchased before you travel or your usual currency exchanged at local banks or exchange offices. You may find yourself paying a commission at these locations, so it's advisable to buy your euros before you travel. Credit and debit cards are accepted all over the island, but again, you may find your card issuer charges a commission.

Places to Visit During Your Tenerife Holidays

Los Gigantes Cliffs – located in the west of the island, this secluded resort has a certain untouched nature about it. What attracts the tourists most of all are the giant cliff formations. The Museum of Nature and Man – located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this museum houses many important artefacts. There are native tools, carving and well-preserved mummies. It also contains the largest collection of the Guanche aboriginal cultures on ancient Tenerife.

Piramide de Arona – live performances take place here and they're suitable for adults and children. Even if you don't speak very much Spanish, the flamenco opera and dance performances are easy to understand. Teide National Park – this is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, at the centre of which is the 3,718-metre-high Mount Teide. It's one of the oldest national parks on the island and is important both culturally and historically. Take one of the many routes and soak up the breath-taking views.
